The Case for Belief

  • "Eternity is a long time to be wrong!"

This sign at a church on 84th Street is a sobering reminder. What IF Jesus is God, and what IF His work on the cross paid it all, and what IF eternal destinations are determined by belief or disbelief in Him, and what IF you decided that "all roads lead to heaven" so you would just follow your own self-designated path, and what IF you were to die while hanging on to your own self-sufficient righteousness, and what IF you awakened on the other side of your grave to find out you were wrong? Eternity IS a long time to be wrong!

We have to know. We cannot be satisfied simply to assume. We cannot find peace just by hoping we are right. What if we are wrong? We have to know because eternity is a long time to be wrong!

"Many other signs (attesting miracles) Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples...but these have been written so that you may believe..." John 20:30

Water becomes vintage wine in the act of the pouring

A government official's son is raised from his death-bed by the command of Jesus at 20 miles distance

He stood, walked, and carried his mattress away from the infirmary which had been his home for 38 years...no rehab...no relearning...he simply rose and walked at the command of Jesus

In orderly fashion He hosts a tail-gate party for 5,000 men plus their families...and catering it all from a small child's meager lunch...filling hungry bellies plus brimming "take-home" baskets for each of the 12 table-waiters

The storms whipped terror into the hearts of journeymen sailors...and He walked to their rescue, the turbulent waves being His sidewalk

He declared Himself to be the light of the world then gave sight to eyes which had not one time in forty years seen the sun

A man four-days buried wobbles out of an open grave because his name had been called and his restored life commanded by the voice of the caring Jesus

    The case for belief.

And He topped them all off by rising from His own grave on the third day following His brutal murder!

A faith initiated by a miracle is certainly better than no faith at all. But the "signs" selected by John are markers pointing to a person, the Living Word of God. The edited life of Jesus was penned to make a case for belief. "...but these are written that you might believe that Jesus is THE Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life in His name." John 20:31

"These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life" 1 John 5:13

Do you now believe? "Eternity is a long time to be wrong!"
