Titus: In the Head, the Heart and the Hand (also…in the rear view mirror)

  • It HAD to be the “call” of God. Why else would a small-town, Platte Valley preacher be receiving an unsolicited phone call from the search committee chairman of an island congregation? And not GRAND Island. It was a HAWAIIAN island! And to make matters more confusing, the contact call came in February. This HAD to be a call from God!

Island attraction motivates grown people to spend hard-earned cash for the delights of a few days’ pleasure. My generation sees an ad in the paper, or the sidebar on a magazine layout, and our minds immediately think of warm sun, sandy beaches, unhurried mornings, and lazy days. The irresistible call of the islands. A friend of mine once said that it only takes $80,000 per year to live in Lincoln and the rest of your earnings can be spent on island vacations!

Now, one of the many drawbacks to the island “call” is my bride. There are two things she simply does not find desirable. In fact, she finds both of them downright terrifying: flying and water. I have done the research…you cannot drive to the islands. And once you do arrive, you are completely surrounded by water! The one time we DID make it to the islands, we were awake at 4:00 in the morning watching the daily news from New York City. The program was interrupted by a news alert…a hurricane was headed straight toward our island. Takes very little creativity to imagine the reaction in THAT hotel suite!

Titus got my “call”. As the ministry associate of the great Apostle, he was left behind on the island of Crete. Tough job, but someone had to do it! However, the draw of the destination was not the sunny days, the slow-paced mornings and the lazy afternoons. The lure was the desperate need of the many churches that had been planted there. The purpose for which these fellowships were established was the priority of making the gospel of Christ attractive and available to certifiably lost peoples. The message that rescues by faith alone in Christ alone. The message that moves the believer toward becoming less like himself and more like the Savior. The message that turns the heart from the unfulfilling and bankrupt “pleasures” of self-gratifying addictions to find joy and expectation in the blessed hope of the soon return of Jesus. The “call” for Titus was the hard work of setting remaining issues in order so that the churches on the island would become effective witnesses to the glorious good news; churches that would not simply be safe-harbors for former pagans, but contagious, penetrating and impactful messengers of the life-giving message of hope in Christ.

Our February call from Honolulu was not the “call” of God. The realities of island fever (the claustrophobia that comes from being completely surrounded by water 24/7) certainly had to be considered. But greater than that, the discovery that the calling congregation had a deeply serious issue among the leadership which they did not have the conviction or courage to address made it clear that, as incredibly romantic as it sounded to pastor the Church of the Pacific, God was not leading that way. He simply used that dialogue to dislodge our roots in G-burg and prepare us for the August call that would come from Lincoln. We could drive there and not have to fly. And when we arrived, the largest body of water that would have to be addressed was Holmes Lake.

The destination was different, but the mission remains the same. To set in order the things which remain, in order that the Church of Jesus Christ might be an effective witness to the glorious good news!

See you Sunday, Church, as we take the exit ramp and place Titus in our rear view mirror!

  • The celebration of Easter can easily be an event of ritual. But the event we celebrate is anything but! In fact, the story of Easter is the essential fact! It is the fact of "first importance" and involves the two most important events in all of human history, the death AND the resurrection from death of Jesus Christ.

"Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures" 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

Christ died for our sins and "sin" is not a word we like to use in today’s society, but sin IS sin.
    Sin is:

    • Doing anything that God forbids
    • Failing to do anything that God commands
To refrain and to obey are not human nature. It is that exact sin nature and sin action that has separated us from a Holy God. With that separation comes consequences… death. "For the wages of sin is death…" Romans 6:23

    But God...

But God desired and willed that His creation be saved to Himself through His one and only Son. In Christ’s dying He:

    • Revealed the justice of a Holy God
    • Explained the love of a seeking God
    • Paid the sinner's penalty in full
    • Restored fallen man to relationship with God
John Piper expresses it this way, “His suffering absorbed all the judgment that guilty sinners deserved and purchased all the good that forgiven sinners enjoy.”

So we do not need a "lifestyle reformation", what we DO need is a soul-deep transformation.

So we do not need a "good example" or a "great teacher", what we DO need is a Deliver and Savior!

All of this was accomplished “According to the Scriptures…”. From Genesis thru Revelation, a river of blood flows that reminds us of the consequences of sin.

Genesis 3:21 “And the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them…” The shedding of innocent blood was necessary to cover Adam & Eve.

Genesis 4:4 “And Abel…brought of the firstlings of his flock—and the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering”. The shedding of innocent blood was an acceptable sacrifice.

Exodus 12  “Take for yourselves lambs…and slay the Passover lamb…apply its blood to the lintel and doorposts of your house…”. The shedding of innocent blood was needed in order for death to pass over.

John 1:29  “Behold! The lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” The shedding of innocent blood would save an entire world.

Revelation 5  “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing” The resurrected Lamb will reign forever!

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that He was buried and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures…” 1 Corinthians 15:4

It is not enough that Jesus died and was raised from the dead however. Our being saved from sin depends on our belief in these facts. Jesus died, was buried and rose from the dead "according to the scriptures". Those same scriptures implore us to believe!

"But the Scripture has shut up all men under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe." Galatians 3:22

Do YOU believe? Will YOU believe?

  • “He is not here, He is risen, just as He said!” Luke 24:6

One hundred and twenty-three years after that tragic day, my son discovered the marker of her grave. His search for the stone was initiated by, first his sister Amy’s and then his Mom’s reading of “The Children’s Blizzard”, the account of the horrible, tragic storm of January 12, 1888. One historian summarizes:

No other winter storm in the history of the plains, it may be safely said, was ever more destructive than this one. The states of Nebraska and South Dakota were visited by the blizzard in all its ferocity. Loss to human life and property on the plains, in places, was simply appalling, and the surviving residents of those sections cannot speak of it even now without an involuntary shudder. The storm burst with great suddenness and fury, and many there were who did not live to tell the story of their suffering.

The morning of January 2 dawned damp and gloomy. A mist had been falling during the night, and the wind, which blew gently from the south, was just cold enough to turn the moisture covering all nature into a light hoarfrost. Before noon the frost had disappeared and every indication pointed to an early clearing of the sky. Around the hour of noon a terrific storm blast came bearing down upon the open prairies and dotted valleys. In a moment, heavy leaden clouds were blotted out. A bewildering, blinding sheet of dust like snow was whirled through the air, and before evening the thermometer had sunk to 25 degrees below zero. The wayfarer, caught far from home, soon found his pathway obstructed by the drifts of snow and every familiar guide mark obliterated. His bearings once gone would mean certain death unless he should chance in his blind gropings to stumble upon some human habitation or friendly stack of hay or straw in his path. As the early part of the day had been so mild, many people had ventured from home. Scores of farmers were caught in the towns, where they had to remain for several days, chafing under the restraint, but absolutely snow bound. Others less fortunate, caught on the road, in the valleys or out in the hills, soon found themselves in a terrible predicament.

Everybody suffered immense hardships or inconvenience in this terrible storm, but none suffered more keenly than did the occupants of the prairie schoolhouses. On that fateful morning, Etta SHATTUCK, after sending her children home (all living near) tried to go to her home. Losing her way, she took refuge in a haystack, where she remained, helpless and hungry Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, suffering intensely and not able to move. She lived but a short time after her terrible experience.

Numerous exploratory bike rides this winter, visiting one country cemetery after another, finally found their reward when Robb discovered this marker in the Seward cemetery. There, country schoolteacher, Etta Shattuck, who loved her own students at the expense of her own well-being, is memorialized for her short life of 19 years, 9 months, 28 days.

As Easter morning rapidly nears, we look to another ancient marker. In a garden just outside Jerusalem, stands a rolled-back stone and an empty tomb. And those who visit the graves of their loved ones are given hope of life again, because the One who once rested in that grave declared, “Because I live, you shall live also!” John 14:19

    See you Resurrection Sunday, Church!

  • “…and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently…

Paul implores Titus to speak confidently of "these things". As we near the end of our study of Titus, it is good to reflect back on all that has been said, to ensure that we indeed can "speak confidently" of the gospel.

Two passages in Titus have summarized the gospel (2:11-14 / 3:4-7) with words that are worthy of repeating.

Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
Grace: receiving what we do not deserve
    Salvation: unsolicited rescue & deliverance

    Redemption: unpayable debt PAID
    Possession: trophies of His grace

Titus 3:4-7 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy,
by the washing of regeneration and
    renewing by the Holy Spirit,
whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

    Justification: declared guilt free

Mercy: NOT receiving what we DO deserve
    Purification: cleansing
    Sanctification: new values/desires
    Empowerment: the Holy Spirit

    Expectation!

Those who are called to believe are then called to good deeds, so that HE may receive the glory.

"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."  Matthew 5:16

Our actions, that others see, need to serve as light in a dark and hopeless world. Our "deeds", should meet the needs of others so that again, God is glorified.

A concluding “diversion”; this past week, marks the world premiere of Handel’s Messiah (first performed in Dublin Ireland on April 12, 1742). While we typically think of this work as a Christmas piece, the majority of the music and scripture focuses on Easter, His resurrection and future return. This world premiere was actually a "benefit concert", and the announcement read as follows:

“For relief of the Prisoners in the several Goals, and for the support of Mercer's Hospital in Stephen's Street, and of the Charitable Infirmary on the Inns Quay, on Monday the 12th of April, will be performed at the Musick Hall on Fishamble Street Mr. Handel's new Grand Oratorio, call'd the MESSIAH...”
 (Dublin Journal, 27 March, 1742)

This great piece of music was first heard to benefit the prisoner, the sick, and the poor. Our Messiah does that still!

“I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I will also hold you by the hand and watch over you. And I will appoint you as a covenant to the people, as a light to the nations, to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the dungeon, and those who dwell in darkness from the prison." Isaiah 42:6-7

    Fools Become Family

  • “For we also once were foolish ourselves…” (Titus 3:3)

    “But… God...” (Titus 3:4)

All of us were born sinners… disobedient, slaves to self to the point of hating others… despicable us! We were born fools and without a miraculous intervention, fools we will remain…

    But God…

"But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us…" (Titus 3:4-5a) God’s salvation is not due to anything that we have done, but an amazing working of the Trinity. God saved us, by the washing and renewing by the Holy Spirit, that is poured out upon us through Jesus Christ. The gospel in one short passage of scripture!

"But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:4-7)

All of this so that we might “be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life”. God desires to take fools and make them family! The saying goes “you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family”. Well guess what? That does NOT apply to God, He DOES pick His "family".

If we have accepted God’s gift of Spirit re-birthing salvation through His Son Christ Jesus, we can no doubt give an account of what the gospel is. Michael Krause entreated us to be intense and filled with authentic praise and worship about our great God and His great love for us!

    We were fools…

    But God!!!

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

  • If you never cast, you never catch!

An out-of-towner strolled up to them as they were winding up a long night’s work. Sweaty, tired, wanting to be home, but still having repair work to do so they could begin the next labor shift fully prepared, the out-of-towner seemed to poke them a bit. “And walking by the sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother…and He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19

The next time He dropped by to chat, these two were again cleaning things up after a long night of work. And they were not in a very good mood (which seems like a rather standard timing thing when Jesus comes by to speak to us…). Anyway, Jesus took advantage of their idle fishing vessel and converted it into a platform and pulpit. He taught the crowds on the shore, a gathering that must have been a bit of a hindrance to these exhausted and frustrated commercial fishermen who had just worked a whole shift and had absolutely nothing to show for it. They were just trying to get things prepared for another go at it and they had all these people crowding around and the out-of-towner taking over their boat. And He said to Peter, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Luke 5:4 Like they hadn’t already thought of that?!? They knew their business. They were well aware of the process of reward. Fishing was their gig! But with token protest, they did as instructed. And they almost lost the boat. In fact, they almost lost TWO boats! And Jesus said, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.” Luke 5:10

  • Paul has written to his "son in the faith" Titus on matters of Christian thinking and living in all aspects of life and work. In chapter 1, life in the church is address (“…For this reason I left you in Crete, that you might set in order what remains, and appoint elders in every city as I directed you Titus 1:5).

In the second chapter, life in the home is addressed (Titus 2:1-8) as each “age and stage” of believer is characterized with attributes such as “dignified”, “loving”, “pure”, “kind”, “sensible”, and “self-controlled”. The last part of the second chapter (2:9-10) provides commentary on living in the workplace.

As we now turn our attention to Titus chapter 3, we are reminded of how we ought to live in our community, our state, and our country.

“Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be un-contentious, gentle, showing every consideration for all men.” Titus 3:1-2

Our relationship to government and/or those in authority over us has vertical and horizontal underpinnings. Vertical in that God has divinely appointed all in political power…

“Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.”  Rom. 13:1

While God is our ultimate authority, when there is no Biblical conflict, we are to be respectfully subject to our civic, state and national leaders as they are in place because of HIS hand. And the first step in demonstrating our submission is to pray for our leaders…

“First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.” 1Tim 2:1-2

God has never truly blessed the woman or man who resists authority and resents accountability!

There is also a horizontal aspect of our living in the community as we are called… “to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be un-contentious, gentle, showing every consideration for all men.”  Titus 3:2

Speak in a way as not to malign others, yield where possible so as to be un-contentious, be under the Spirit so as to be gentle, and be considerate one for another…

The gospel is not political, it is revolutionary! It is God calling sinful men and women to Himself through His Son! We are all sinners and fools… (For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another... Titus 3:3) And yet because of His amazing grace, we can be His children…

Amazing because He would want us and grace because He does want us!

Be in submission to those in authority so that all may see… "the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind…"

"For the purpose of clarity, I want to make one further point to Sunday's message on our proper response to governing authorities.  That is, in Christian love and citizen responsibilities, we DO have the right and freedom to examine and question the POLICIES of our leaders.  We do NOT have freedom to the disdain the PERSON of our leaders.  We can debate policy...we must not denigrate the person.  They, too, are souls for whom Christ died!"
    Blessings,

  • “I wanted to be remembered as someone who helped a lot of people.”

“Remind them to be ready for every good deed.” Titus 3:1

Life so deceives us that we unknowingly distort and pervert the true meaning and source of pleasure, of meaning, of significance. Without our seeing it transpire, too soon what we believe we control has suddenly taken control of us. We become enslaved by our pleasures and possessions. Self becomes King and all of our energies and focus is upon feeding our king!

I have carried this news clipping in my Bible for nearly five years…
In his darkest moments, Jack Whittaker has sometimes wondered if winning the nearly $315 million Powerball game was really worth it.  The jackpot that was the stuff of dreams turned into a nightmare.  Almost five years later, Whittaker is left with things that money can’t cure: His daughter’s cancer, a long list of discretions documented in newspapers, and an inability to trust others.

“I don’t have any friends,” he said in a lengthy interview with the Associated Press. “Every friend that I’ve had, practically, has wanted to borrow money or something, and of course, once they borrow money from you, you can’t be friends anymore.”

In all, Whittaker says he’s been involved in 460 legal actions since winning. His wife has left him. His protégé and sole heir, his grand-daughter, died of drug addictions.

“If it would bring my grand-daughter back, I’d give it all back. But I can’t get her back, so might as well keep the money, I guess.”

The deception of redefined meaning and purpose in life is a slave master requiring an enormous ransom for deliverance. Paul describes it to his protégé, Titus, in these terms: “For we also were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another…” Titus 3:3 Slaves of the self we have declared king, and foolishly convincing ourselves that we are really free.

The good news? “But…He saved us!” Titus 3:4-5 Paid the ransom price demanded so that rather than live in bondage to self-gratification, we are set free to give our lives in service to others. “To purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds” Titus 2:14

When asked about his own legacy, Whittaker replied, “I’m only going to be remembered as the lunatic who won the lottery. I’m not proud of that. I wanted to be remembered as someone who helped a lot of people.”

Set free from self in order to serve. Behold, the power of the gospel!

    See you Sunday, Church!
