The oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico has caused the employees of the companies involved to search for solutions to take care of the thousands of barrels of oil gushing into the water. At first they worked to activate the blowout preventer, a series of mechanical devices to crimp the pipe which had tapped into the oil reservoir. Next, a 100,000 pound dome of concrete and steel was lowered to the ocean floor a mile below the surface of the water. That has been followed by the insertion of a new section of pipe into the broken well pipe to siphon the oil to the surface.
Another effort calls for a smaller dome called a top hat to fit over the top of the well. One more solution is to use ground up rubber and plastic injected at a high pressure into the structure that's covering the well. Meanwhile the effort to deal with the oil that has gotten out of the well has involved spraying and dumping a chemical dispersant on top of and into the water where oil has been seen. Thousands of feet of booms, some made of human hair, are being prepared and deployed on the surface to contain and soak up the oil. Hundreds of engineers and workers have been called into action in a frantic effort for wisdom that will lead to a solution to the problem.
Thankfully, most of us will never have to deal with such a huge disaster, but the diligent efforts of the workers searching for wisdom and a solution do carry with them a lesson for the harried household. Proverbs 2 gives us the details. As Pastor Tom outlined in his message Sunday, as we receive God's sayings, treasure His commandments, make our ears attentive, incline our hearts to understand, cry for discernment, lift our voice, seek and search for understanding then we will begin to gain the wisdom for our lives. And, as we gain that wisdom, we will receive the knowledge and the solution to the harried household.
"Then you will discern righteousness and justice and equity and every good course. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will guard you, understanding will watch over you." Proverbs 2:9-11
The teams of experts seeking to solve the oil leak are forced to rely on the wisdom of man. A key difference between the search for a solution to the oil leak and our own harried households is that the Lord has given us the answer, all we need to do is to tap into the Scriptures and apply the lessons to our lives. Hopefully, as you read through Proverbs 18 today, you are comforted by the name of the Lord, for He is indeed our strong tower, safety for the wise man.
Search for your solution in the Scriptures. There is hope for the harried household!
